day1 - first spark

Hi there,

Me and a colleague Catralitos, decided that we wanted to learn unreal. We are familiar with Unity but have very little experience in this engine. We wanted to commit to creating something in Unreal and though this Jam was a great opportunity to go for it!

We, together with two artists will be developing something over the next month and will do our best to keep a running devlog of the process.

Today we focused on just generally deciding what the game will be. We first decided on two aspects of the game. It should't be too hard to develop, it should use 3D graphics to fully explore Unreal's graphics and lighting capabilities.

We decided to pursue a 2.5 platformer where the player is armed with a shotgun like weapon that can be aimed in 360 degrees. However most enemies will have armor that protects them from damage. To defeat enemies, the player first needs to break their guard. The player has two major ways of disarming; He can run into a slide, sending the enemy flying upwards where he can follow up with a kick shot. Or he can jump and perform a dive kick into the enemy. We hope that these two actions of disarming and going for a shot flow nicely into each other, helping the player get into a certain satisfying rhythm.

There would also be some platforming challenges. The player can shoot his weapon while in the air to get knocked in the opposite direction. Allowing for trajectory changes mid air.

The game would feature levels and a few enemy types.

As for art style, we might be opting for abstract shapes and lighting effects instead of detailed environments, as 3D art is time-consuming.

I'll soon be diving into unreal and logging my experience with it!
